The High Pass

The High Pass is the principal route through the Misty Mountains taken by Thorin and Company after leaving Rivendell, a crossing that proves to be one of the most dangerous stages of their quest. It is the path that leads directly into the heart of goblin territory, precipitating the company's capture and Bilbo Baggins's transformative encounter with Gollum and the discovery of the One Ring. The pass represents the threshold between the relatively safe lands of the West and the true perils of the Wild, and its crossing fundamentally alters the course of the adventure.

Geography and Strategic Importance

The High Pass is the route that Elrond's advice and Gandalf's knowledge direct the company to take over the Misty Mountains. It is described as a "hard path and a dangerous path, a crooked way and a lonely and a long" . The pass is not merely a physical obstacle but a strategic gateway: on its far side lies Wilderland, the Lonely Mountain, and the dragon Smaug. The company's goal is to cross it and then continue east through Mirkwood to reach their destination. However, the pass is known to be infested with evil things, and Gandalf is well aware that "something unexpected might happen" . The choice of this route, while necessary, brings the dwarves directly into the domain of the goblins, who have recently opened a new entrance at the top of the pass .

The Storm and the Cave

The company's attempt to cross the High Pass is thwarted by a violent thunderstorm, a "thunder-battle" of such ferocity that stone-giants are seen hurling rocks at one another for sport . Seeking shelter, Fili and Kili discover a dry cave, which they claim to have thoroughly explored (E00479–E00480). Despite Gandalf's caution—he knows that caves in the mountains are seldom unoccupied—the company takes refuge inside. This decision proves disastrous: while they sleep, a crack opens at the back of the cave, and goblins pour out, capturing all but Gandalf (E00486–E00487). The cave is in fact a "Front Porch" to the goblins' underground realm, and the pass itself has become a hunting ground for them .

Capture and Escape

The goblins drag the prisoners deep into their tunnels, to the Great Goblin's cavern, where they are threatened with death (E00502–E00514). Gandalf, who escaped the initial ambush, kills the Great Goblin and leads the dwarves in a desperate flight through the dark passages (E00517–E00518). During the escape, Bilbo is knocked unconscious and left behind, setting the stage for his solitary journey in the dark, his discovery of the ring, and his riddle-game with Gollum (E00532–E00535). The High Pass thus becomes the catalyst for Bilbo's most significant personal transformation, as he emerges from the tunnels not only alive but in possession of a magic ring that grants invisibility.

Consequences and Aftermath

The crossing of the High Pass has lasting consequences for the entire quest. The company loses their ponies and most of their supplies, and they emerge on the eastern side of the mountains far north of their intended path . This detour leads them into the lands of Beorn and then into Mirkwood, altering the course of their journey. Moreover, the goblins' anger at the death of the Great Goblin and the escape of the prisoners spurs them to plan a great raid, which ultimately contributes to the gathering of forces that culminates in the Battle of Five Armies (E00979–E00980). The High Pass, therefore, is not merely a geographical feature but a narrative fulcrum: it is the point at which the adventure shifts from a planned expedition into a series of desperate improvisations, and it is the place where Bilbo Baggins begins to become the hero he never expected to be.
